Shirley M. Burl, 84, passed away on July 5, 2015 at Brookdale Senior Living in Charleston, SC. She was born on June 29, 1931 in Champlain, NY to Edward and Arietta (Butterfield) Hebert. Shirley was a lifelong resident of Champlain. She married Leslie Burl Sr. on July 31, 1948 in St. Mary's Church in Champlain where they were faithful parishioners. They were happily married for 60 years. Shirley and her husband, Leslie, owned and operated Burl's Mobil Station, with the help of their children. Later, the couple owned Man-O-War Restaurant, where she was famous for her delicious soups. After a lifetime of accomplishments, Shirley and Leslie moved to the Carolinas, but continued to summer in Champlain. Shirley enjoyed dancing, playing cards, board games, painting ceramics, and was an avid knitter. You could often find her at bingo with her friends. She loved her family and friends dearly, but her grand-children and great grand-children were her heart. The companionship she shared with her dog, Holly, also meant the world to her. Shirley is survived by her son, Leslie and wife, Tammy Burl of the City of Central, LA; her daughter, Teal and husband, Gordon Britten of Summerville, SC; a grand-daughter, Melissa and husband, Robert Gooley of Champlain; a grand-son, Ian Britten of Summerville, SC; five step grand-daughters, Cecilia and husband Joey Jones, Jamie, Ariel, Clair, and Tamara Shows all of the City of Central, LA. She is also survived by three great grand-children; Logan, Emma, and Carter Gooley of Champlain; and one step great grand-child, AnnMarie Jones, of the City of Central, LA. Shirley is also survived by her sister, Celia and husband, Gerald Lefebvre of Champlain; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie E. Burl Sr., her parents Edward and Arietta Hebert, one brother, Herbie Hebert, and two sisters, Frances Lapine and Gloria Rabideau. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25th, 2015 at St. Mary's Church in Champlain with Rev. Clyde A. Lewis, pastor, celebrating the Mass. Interment will be private and will immediately follow in Glenwood Cemetery in Champlain.
