Obituary of Mabel Elizabeth Smith

MABEL H. SMITH Mabel H. Smith, 93, of Smith Lane, Lake Placid, NY died on August 7, 2016 at AMC-Uihlein Living Center in Lake Placid. She was born in Keene, NY on January 13, 1923 the daughter of Milton S. and Mary E. Hartson. She was married to John Dustin Smith on March 23, 1947, who survives. She was predeceased by two brothers, Charles M. and Richard L. Hartson. Also surviving are two sons; Richard D. (Susan) of Lake Placid, and William H. (Janice) of Tonawanda, NY and one daughter Janis S. (Robert) Bickford of Malone, NY., six grandchildren; David H. and Erik T. Smith, (Rebecca), Justin R. (Kay-Lynn), and Kelsey M. Bickford, Michael D. (Sharon) and Kathleen E. Smith. Seven great-grandchildren also survive; Barrett and Bailey Smith, Austin, Emmalynn, Julianna and Cohen Bickford, and Lucia Mabel Smith. Mabel graduated in 1939 from Keene Central School. She attended The Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, NY graduating in 1944. She returned to Lake Placid to work at Placid Memorial Hospital retiring in 1979. During her earlier years she was a private duty nurse to Kate Smith's mother at her camp, always reminiscing of her singing God Bless America during the evenings in summer. Mabel volunteered at the Red Cross Bloodmobiles and First Aid at the Mt. Van Hovenberg Bobsled Run for many years. She was also an instructor for the "Candy Stripers" program at Placid Memorial Hospital, and a past member of the Lake Placid Volunteer Firemen's "Phone Tree". Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Clark Funeral Home, Saranac Ave. Lake Placid, NY. Calling hours will be Friday, August 12, 10-11:30 AM, a funeral service will follow at the funeral home, with burial in Norton Cemetery, Keene, NY. Those wishing to remember her may donate to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service or Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department in lieu of flowers.
