Obituary of Ellen M. Thomas

Ellen Thomas, 91, of Lake Placid, NY, died peacefully on January 11th at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid. She is survived by Charles, her husband of 64 years; son Christopher (Deborah) of Denver, Colorado; son Charles of Lake Placid; daughter Kathleen of Lake Placid; grandson Christopher (Lindsey) of Denver; granddaughter Kathryn of Denver; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, L. Robert Juckett, of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. The daughter of Seward and Mary (Murray) Juckett, Ellen was born May 24, 1926, in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Every summer her family sojourned at Saranac Inn on Upper Saranac Lake, where her father landscaped and maintained the golf course. So began Ellen's life-long love of the Adirondack region. After graduating from Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1947 with a degree in mathematics and secondary education, Ellen returned to the North Country. She taught math at Saranac Lake High School and worked summers in the golf shop at Saranac Inn. There she met her future husband, also a teacher, who worked on the golf course for his future father-in-law. After a year teaching together at Ticonderoga Central School, the couple moved to New City, New York, where they raised their family. Ellen taught math at Clarkstown High School in New City and Albertus Magnus High School in Nanuet. She and her husband retired in 1981 and relocated to Lake Placid. Ellen was a talented golfer, bridge player, gardener, quilter, and seamstress. In the 1960s she designed a line of children's clothing, which she sewed, embroidered, and marketed from her home in New City. She enjoyed traveling, entertaining, cross-country skiing, and detective novels. Ellen had a vivid imagination, a wonderful sense of humor, and a strong sense of social justice. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Ellen will be remembered with great love by her family and friends. Visitation will be held Friday, January 19th from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Noon at the Reiss Memorial Chapel in Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid, Lake Placid, NY.
