William G. "Mike" Hollrock III Obituary

William "Mike" Hollrock III, of Lake Placid, NY, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of February 26, 2026 at the age of 86. Born to William Gustav Hollrock and Kathryn Kalix Hollrock, February 15, 1940 in White Plains, NY.

Mike graduated from White Plains high school in 1958 and went on to play football at the University of Miami. From there he worked throughout the Gulf states selling cranes and heavy equipment. His love of fast cars led to a series of speeding tickets and loss of his license, ending his traveling sales career.

Mike's compulsion for excitement soon found a new passion. In 1962 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Stationed in Plattsburgh, NY as a B-47 Bomber mechanic, it was there that he was recruited to join the United States Air Force Bobsled Team.

After his service in the Air Force, Mike moved to Lake Placid, NY and soon met Agnes Lalonde. They would go on to support each other for the next 54 years.

Mike continued sliding on the US National Team, advancing from brakeman to driver. He quickly found success in the pilot's seat, winning several national 4-man bobsled titles.

In 1976 in Innsbruck, Austria, Mike was a member of the United States Olympic Bobsled Team beginning his long association, over many decades in various roles in international competition and the Olympics. After his competitive racing career Mike transitioned from athlete to head coach of the 1988 Olympic Bobsled Team in Calgary. Mike also served as race director during the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Games. As an international race official for the FIBT (now the International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation) he spent many years traveling the world in the winters and enjoyed attending the Winter Olympic Games on many occasions including, 1992 Albertville, France, 1994 Lillehammer, Norway and 1998 Nagano Japan.

In 2012, Mike was inducted into the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Hall of Fame for his lifetime of dedicated service and time spent world wide giving to the sport he so loved. Mike's love for sports did not end with bobsledding. The New York Giants, Miami Hurricanes and the L.A. Dodgers all had his never ending support both in the stands or late night watching every pitch on L.A. time, Mike was there! Mike always looked forward to the Spring and for 55 years he would drive south to New Smyrna Beach Florida. It was there that he enjoyed time spent with a number of life long friends and where he developed his love for offshore fishing. He continued his quest for giant fish well into his 80's. Mike founded Hollrock Poured Concrete Inc. in the early 1970's. Installing foundations for residential and commercial buildings in the area for over 4 decades.

Mike enjoyed many summers of softball, golf, boating and riding his Harley with friends. They would all attest to one of Mike's most endearing qualities, his eternal optimism. Big Daddy could count every bad day he had in 86 years, on one hand.

Mike was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Agnes Lalonde Hollrock of Lake Placid, NY. He is survived by his sons, Todd (Kester) Hollrock of Lake Placid, NY and Brad (Phoebe) Hollrock of Ray Brook, NY; his sisters Jacquiline (Gary) Johnson of Stone Ridge, NY and Judy (Bill) Drummond of Hilton Head, SC; his five granddaughters, August, Avery, Emma, Abby, Holly and many nieces, nephews and countless friends all over the world.
