Obituary of Roselyn Margaret Carey

Please share a memory of Roselyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roselyn Carey, beloved daughter of Dennis Carey and Rose Bennett, known to friends and family as Rosie, died Sunday morning, January 17, of natural causes at the Interlake Health hospital unit in Ticonderoga, New York. She was 99 and the last surviving sibling of four. She is survived by a large extended family: her nephew Carl Harvey, son of her sister Marion, whom she helped raise; her brother Joe's family, including his wife Terry and their children Eileen, Michael, Christine and Cathy, and their families; and her brother, Vincent's family, including his wife, Edie, and their children, Ann, Jim, Vincent and Mary Pat, and their families. Rosie was born in 1916 on the family farm in Keene, New York, where she stayed until she finished high school. From there, she went up to Fannie Allen Hospital in Vermont, for nurse's training and became a Registered Nurse. Upon graduating she moved to Cornell, NY to begin her nursing career and dated many suitors, though none won her hand. These were some of her happiest memories. In 1948, she moved to the Boston area to help her sister raise her son Carl. In the sixties she moved in, for a while with her brother, Joe and his family to help take care of their aging father. Her life, whether as parent, aunt or nurse, was marked by extraordinary kindness and gentleness. When she retired in 1983, she moved into the family home in St Huberts, Keene Valley, N.Y. There she continued to provide friends and neighbors with the same kindness and concern she had displayed throughout her life, driving friends and neighbors to church or their doctors' appointments, visiting them in their homes when they were sick and offering succor and support when they experienced loss. Her fondest memories in recent years was when her family, Carl, Eileen and her husband Eric and their kids, along with Michael and Terry, would come and visit. Family stories would be told, retold and told yet again, all to riotous laughter. And games of Scrabble, her favorite, were always on the agenda. One of her last acts of kindness came two years before she went into the nursing home. She discovered a feral cat living under porch, during an unusually harsh winter. Even though she was on a walker, she began leaving food outside in a dish, gently encouraging the cat to take the food. Gradually, over weeks, both earned the trust of each other. The cat, which she came to name Blackie, soon became a family member. And he still is family member, now living with Carl and his wife, Cindy. Rosie will be deeply missed and always loved. Services are as follows: The wake will be held at M. B. Clark, Inc., Funeral Home in Lake Placid, NY, Sunday, January 24th, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
