Obituary of Lois A. Di Nicola
Please share a memory of Lois to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lois DiNicola, a woman known for her humor, charm, and inner and outer beauty, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on July 18, 2024, at Elderwood Lake Placid. She was 91.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 8, 1933, to Russell Vallier and Ina Emery, Lois lived a life full of love, service, and laughter. After graduating high school, Lois joined the Air Force and was stationed at Ellington Air Force Base in Texas, where she met the love of her life, Robert DiNicola. They married in 1954 and moved to New York, where they raised their family, eventually setting down roots in the Town of Huntington, NY.
Lois was a devoted and loving homemaker and mother, always giving her time and energy to others. She had a beautiful voice, loved singing in church, and enjoyed listening to Motown. Remarkably talented, Lois was highly skilled at flower arranging and gardening. She also cherished days spent at the beach, bowling, camping, holding Tupperware parties, and playing mah-jong with her dear Long Island friends. Family road trips back to her beloved "Camp Joy" in Michigan were among her fondest memories.
After retiring from Long Island, Lois and Robert built their dream home in Lake Placid and moved there in 1990, where they spent their golden years together until Robert's passing in 2000. Lois enjoyed her 28 years in her home on Moongate Lane, and even as dementia took its toll, she remained surrounded by love and care, with her daughter Sharon by her side to comfort her and make her smile.
Lois spent many happy years as an active volunteer at her church and in her community in Lake Placid, where she made some of her best friends and memories. So many people knew and loved Lois. She was easy to be around. Whenever help was needed, Lois was there with a smile and a helping hand.
A highly skilled seamstress and cook, she loved to spend time in the kitchen crafting delicious meals for her loved ones. Her soups, stuffed artichokes, and lasagna were legendary, bringing joy and comfort to all who had the pleasure of tasting them.
She is now reunited with her husband Bob, her son-in-law Tom, and many friends who went before her, likely already making soup, lasagna, and baking glorious goodies in Heaven.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who cared for Lois during her final years. A special thank you to all her friends who visited her while she was in various care facilities these past six years. Your love and support meant the world to her and to us.
A service to celebrate Lois's life will be held on Wednesday, July 24th, at 10:00 AM at Saint Agnes Church with her friend and Pastor, Father John Yonkovig, officiating. A presentation of military honors by American Legion Post 326 of Lake Placid and the burial of her ashes will immediately follow at Saint Agnes Cemetery.
She is survived by her three children, Glenn DiNicola of Phoenix, Arizona, Diane DiNicola-Powers of Huntington, New York, and Sharon Angulot of Vero Beach, Florida. She is also survived by five grandchildren, who she loved very much and was very proud of: Alexander Powers, Douglas Powers, Casey DiNicola, Camille Powers, and Iliana DiNicola. They were all very special to her, and her beauty and grace live on through them.
In lieu of flowers, her family asks that any donations be made to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in her memory.
Lois's legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. God bless Lois. At long last, she is at peace.
