Obituary of George Shepard Hare
Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George S. Hare, of Halfmoon, NY, passed on to eternal life on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on February 3, 1937, in Lake Placid, NY, George lived a life marked by dedication, adventure, and love.
George was one of ten children and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Zeferina (Fogg) Hare, his parents, and all of his siblings. He is survived by three devoted children: Angela Clifford of Altoona, PA; C. George Hare and his wife Tana of Bloomingdale, NY; and Susan Stallings and her husband Bruce of Altona, NY. He leaves behind a legacy of love with eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A proud veteran, George served in the military for 20 years, after being in the ROTC during high school. He enlisted in the Army in 1954 before transferring to the Air Force, where he specialized in repairing cryptography machines. His service took him to various locations, including France, Guam, and Spain, as well as several stateside assignments. He saw active duty in the Vietnam war, stationed on Monkey Mountain. He ultimately retired from military service in 1974 as a Technical Sargent. Post military career, George went to school for refrigeration, and owned his own business, which he operated in the North Country. His other retirement jobs included
managing apartment complexes in Texas, Georgia, Florida, and New York, teaching Building Trades at Adirondack Correctional Facility, and driving a school bus for the Saranac Lake School District. A keen outdoorsman, George found joy in golfing and gardening and spent countless hours at the Sylvan Falls Club in Parishville, NY, where he cherished time at camp with his son. His favorite spot was "up on the pond," where he enjoyed fishing, and each fall found him hunting for the next big buck. In addition to his love for nature, George was a talented musician, who enjoyed playing his harmonica and guitar. He was known for his competitive spirit, regularly defeating his son in games of pool during their visits to the Half Moon Legion.
The last year of George & #39;s life was spent in the memory ward at the Samuel Stratton VA Hospital in Albany, NY. His family is eternally grateful for the exceptional care and kindness shown him by the staff and nurses during this time, as he formed meaningful bonds with those who cared for him.
George will be remembered for his humor, his adventurous heart, and the love he shared with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed.
