Steve and I were in the same class at Northwood School. In the early seventies, we reconnected in Denver. Getting together with him was always special. We spent quite a bit of time together in Lake Placid between 1977 and 1980, when he was living in a cabin at Don and Judy Scammell's. At the time, Steve was writing a book inspired by D.H. Lawrence and producing a lot of paintings, including paintings of some of the stone walls he had built. It was wonderful marriage of avocation and creation. When I would come over from Burlington with a new song or story I had written, Steve would drop everything and check it out. His critiques often informed my next project.

Steve was one of the most driven people I've even known. A devotee of D.H. Lawrence, a musician, a writer, a painter, and a stone mason, Steve's creative engine knew no bounds, even in the wake of hardship.
One of my favorite stories about him involved his poetry. At the time, he was living in Denver, and one weekend he was alone in the hills above Boulder, on foot with only a daypack. He was up there to do some writing, but he got lost in the woods. He kept walking toward the sun, hoping to find a road or a trail. Finally, he came to a clearing, with a small house at the far end of it.
As he approached the house, a man stepped out onto the porch holding a rifle. "What do you want?" the man said.
"I'm sorry to bother you," Steve said. "I've been lost in the woods for a few hours and wondered if you could spare some water."
The man just stared at him for a moment. Then he lowered the rifle and said, "Sure, come on in."
Steve walked up onto the porch and followed the man inside. There were guitars everywhere and concert posters on the walls. The man filled a tall glass with water and began removing sandwich makings from the refrigerator. He spun around and was face to face with Steve. It was Stephen Stills, one of Steve Rand's all-time heroes.
The two of them hit it off, and Steve ended up spending several nights there and played a few of Stills' guitars. Stills was curious about Steve's poetry, so Steve showed it to him. Stills set one of those poems to music and told Steve that he wanted to use it on his next solo album. "I've got to pay you something for your lyrics," Stills said. "Setting up the publishing rights would be much too complicated. Why don't you take that 1935 Martin guitar with you, and we'll call it even."
Steve was blown away. Stills gave him a case for it as well, with "Stephen Stills" silkscreened across it and travel stickers from all over the world.
Steve came back to Lake Placid not long after that.
The usual 5PM crowd was having beers at the Arena Grill when Steve walked in. He shared his story with everyone at the bar. No one believed him—until he went outside and returned with that guitar case.
Six months later, the song with Steve Rand's lyrics was on Stephen Stills next solo album, just as he said it would be.
