I am so very sorry to read in the Tribune about Ben’s loss. I met Ben so many years ago in the hardware store in Wilmington, NY. My in-laws at the time had a home in the acres in Jay, NY & We got talking & somehow figured out we were both from Livingston, NJ & had a love for the beautiful Adirondacks. So very sorry to his wife & family for his passing ! What a nice kind man he was !

I am so sorry for the loss of Ben. He was truly a mentor to young park and recreation professionals. As a friend to me, Ben always had positive encouragement and a ready smile. My condolences to the whole family, and especially Lonnie, who was an intern here at Morris County Parks. Denise Lanza

A tribute to BJ through the eyes of his little brother, Steve
Being my older brother by 14 years, I only got to spend my first three years with him before our mom and dad and I moved to Hawaii in 1954 while he stayed in Tustin, CA, to finish his senior year in high school. My first memory with him was when he visited us in Hawaii. One outstanding memory is when we took a rowboat out into the lagoon near our house which sprung a leak and capsized. I was totally panicked for what seemed like an eternity until I saw my big brother laughing and standing in waist high water. That’s when he went from my big to my big brother the hero. That’s what he has been ever since.
Since then, I only knew BJ from letters, phone calls and occasional visits. Like him, I took to basketball. He visited us my senior year in high school during basketball season. I thought I was a pretty good basketball player at the time until he and I played a little one-on-one. I couldn’t believe how talented and strong he was. He had played basketball at the University of Idaho, but I’d never gotten a chance to see him play. Now I had another reason to look up to him. I applied to the University of Idaho with the idea of following in his footsteps. He’d gone there on a basketball scholarship, but I didn’t enjoy such a distinction so ended up staying in California. Nevertheless, he stood out to me bigger than life.
My second summer after high school, BJ invited me out to Middletown. I spent that summer with him, Barb and their kids, Lon and Con, as I called them. What I came away with after that summer, having seen my big brother at work, was how much time and effort he put into his job. All summer he just cycled through a multitude of projects both at work and at home. I was so impressed with his dedication, his creativity and his nonstop drive and energy. All the while, I got to see him able to be a wonderful, loving husband and a fantastic father. There was no doubt that he was destined for great things. How could he not?
Over the years, he has, indeed, lived up to those expectations. And more! Over that last year or so, he and I have visited a lot on the phone. BJ shared a lot about his life, a lot of which was new to me. It was fun and it was great. He shared with me one particular moment that he said was one of the proudest occasions of his life, one he would always remember. He’d just received his orders to go into the army after college. It was when our dad, a 30-year Marine, pinned a special medal on his uniform. After BJ passed, I was looking through our parent’s things for remembrances of BJ and, in our dad’s wallet that I had kept, I found a picture of him pinning that medal on BJ’s uniform. Clearly, that occasion meant as much to our dad as it did to BJ. I wish I could have shared that with him, though I know he knew how proud his dad was of him. I will miss my big brother.

Q: What will you never forget about Benjamin?
A: I have many good memories of Ben as one of my Recreation professors at Montclair State, particularly from my Special Events course. Ben had a way of motivating his students and we enjoyed the activities he organized, such as the Craigmeur Ski Trip and the Bike Hike at Bass River State Forest.
I was privileged also to have dealt with Ben during my recreation career while he worked in Essex County and at NJRPA District 2 events. He was a great mentor and will be missed.
Fondly, Dennis Buckley
