The year prior to my arrival at Northwood, I was cut from a competitive hockey team in the Chicago area. It was a team of friends with whom I had played with growing up, and when it happened I was devastated. My second year at NWS, we ended up playing the team (and coach) from Chicago, and handily won the game. A couple days after the game, Mr. Friedlander found me in the lunch room and handed me a hockey puck with an inscription he hand wrote about how sweet the victory was over this particular team that had previously cut one of "his" kids. That was and is still a tremendous gift to me, and a reflection of a man who gave more than simply education to the kids around him.
He is missed, and my deepest sympathies to Linda, Diana, and the entire Friedlander family.

Mrs. Friedlander, Diana and family- I am so sorry to hear of your loss. What a wonderfully dynamic man Mr. Friedlander was and I know he will be missed by so many. I have such fond memories of him. I was just in the Northwood lobby to visit my friend (Michele Hall) and he took me by the hand and said let's go look around. That was on a Wednesday and I was enrolled by the following Monday! I wasn't even looking for a new school and he just pulled me right in. I am so grateful to him for giving me such a wonderful experience. I hope you all find peace during this difficult time. My condolences to you Linda and Di for your immense loss. My heart goes out to you at this very sad time. I fondly remember staying with you in the beautiful Lake Placid in the 90s as a 21 year old after befriending Di on the skifields of Breckenridge. You were hospitable, generous and kind. My father Stephen Gilbert visited us and was thrilled to see me in such a safe and caring environment. I will always remember your help and guidance. I will think of you all on the 20th. I will always be grateful for the way our larger than life headmaster made me feel so welcome at Northwood. He knew much more about me at that age than I did. He devoted his life to us all and was a man I am very proud to have been associated with all these years. Hard to say goodbye.
