Rouses Point
Lucille "Lucy" Anctil Merchant, a long-time resident of Rouses Point, passed peacefully Saturday, April 12th at the Skilled Nursing Facility at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, NY with her loving family by her side.
Born December 18, 1920 in Rouses Point, NY to Emeretienne Langlois and Gustave Anctil, Lucille graduated as Valedictorian of her class from Rouses Point High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from the Plattsburgh Normal School (now SUNY.) She continued her studies at Syracuse University where she pursued her Masters in teaching and eventually served as substitute teacher in the Champlain School District.
Lucille married Earl Merchant (WWII veteran) on May 29, 1945 and entered her true calling as devoted wife, and mother of six children. Lucille's dedication and emphasis on education was unparalleled, as she passed this on to each of her six children, 16 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Lucille was also an amazing seamstress, culinary master, and skillful home engineer.
Lucille was a communicant of St. Patrick's Parish in Rouses Point where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and a religious education teacher for several years. Additionally, she was a volunteer a Cedar Hedge Nursing Home where she enjoyed holding French classes for the residents.
Lucille was predeceased by her husband, Earl, a son, Richard and four brothers and three sisters: Albert, Leo, Francis, Henry, Lena, Mary Jane and MaryAnn.
She is survived by her children, Betty Merchant of San Antonio, TX, Dianne (Bob) Skinner of Virginia, Sharman (Jean) Birtz of Rouses Point, Dan (Laura) Merchant of Galveston, TX, and Annette (Charles) Schlegelmilch of Hawaii, and a daughter-in-law, Kazuyo Merchant of Hawaii. 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive.
Calling hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, April 14, 2014 at M.B. Clark Funeral Home, 148 Lake Street, Rouses Point, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 15th at St. Patrick's Church, Lake Street, Rouses Point, NY with Rev. Clyde A. Lewis, pastor, celebrating the mass. Interment will be at a later date in the parish cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to gather immediately following mass at the American Legion Post #912, Pratt Street, Rouses Point for a reception.
