Obituary of Barbara Jean Vassar

Barbara J, Vassar, age 80, of Mill Pond Drive, Lake Placid, NY passed away peacefully with her family by her side Saturday, July 12, 2014 at her home. Mrs. Vassar was born July 18, 1933 in Lake Placid, NY. She was the daughter of Richard Neil Gill and Mary Gertrude (DeMar) Gill. She married Thomas G. Vassar December 5, 1953 at St. Eustace Episcopal Church. She was predeceased by her husband April 7, 1989. She was employed by several families in the Lake Placid area to include the Bogel family, John Holley family and the Carter Lockwood family caring for their homes and camps. She also worked for Dr. Balestrini and at E-Maga-Zee gift shop. Barbara loved to knit, spend time with her family and grandchildren and she was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 326, Lake Placid, NY She is survived by three sons, Douglas Jones and his wife Gina of New Brighton, PA, Steven Vassar and his fiance Melanie Farley of Lake Placid, NY and Brian Vassar and his wife Nicole of Lake Placid, NY. She is also survived by one sister, Carol Tromblee and her husband Chris of Lewis, NY; thirteen grandchildren, Jennifer, Wendy, Amanda, Justin, Steven, Thomas, Sarah, Danica, Jasmine, Jessica, Alyssa, Ryder and Alex and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Mary Gill, her husband Thomas Vassar, and four brothers, Rollie Gill, Richard Gill, Raymond Gill and Robert Gill. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, July, 15th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with an American Legion Auxiliary Prayer Service at 7:45 PM at the M. B. Clark, Inc. Funeral Home, Saranac Ave. Lake Placid, NY. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, July 16th at 11:00 AM at St. Eustace Episcopal Church, Main St., Lake Placid, NY. Rev. David Ousley will officiate. Burial will follow at North Elba Cemetery. The family suggests donations in memory of Barbara J. Vassar be made to High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care.
