Obituary of Richard Y. Smart

Richard Y. Smart, age 82, of 89 Greenwood St., Lake Placid, NY passed away Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough, ME. Mr. Smart was born November 20, 1932 in Onchiota, NY. He is the son of the late Albert and the late Hazel (Brown) Smart. He married Shirley Shumway on April 14, 1956 at St. Agnes Church, Fr. Michael Kelly officiated the wedding. Richard was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Shumway) Smart, she died Oct. 10, 2002 He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, serving from 1953 to 1955 and received an Honorable Discharge from the US Army Reserve on April 30, 1961. He retired in 1999 from Placid Memorial Hospital / Adirondack Medical Center, Lake Placid, NY as supervisor of the maintenance department. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 326, Lake Placid, NY, and he was very active in the Lake Placid Pee Wee Association. Mr. Smart is survived by his daughter, Cindy Smart-Muehle and her husband Kirk of Windham, ME; two grandchildren, Breanna Muehle of Portland, ME and Brent Muehle and his fiance Ashley Kirby of Windham, ME; one great granddaughter, Ella Muehle; his companion, Mary Ann Lawrence of Lake Placid, NY and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Hazel Smart and his step-father Halsey Hatch; five brothers, Edwin, Albert, Allen, Robert, and Roger Smart; his sister Thelma Gathers and one step-brother, Ralph Hatch. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 5th at 11:00 AM at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Saranac Ave. Lake Placid, NY. Rev. John Yonkovig will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Lake Placid, NY with Military Honors given by the American Legion, Post 326 in May.
