I think of Bill and his family from time to time. All of the times we spent together were always uplifting. When Bill first came to town it was refreshing to hear his anecdotes and talk about our children who played hockey together. Our hockey trips were especially fun filled. Certainly I could write a book on the short 26 years I knew Bill but it would have to include a few details that we kept to ourselves for later years that we would laugh about as anyone who knew Bill could attest to. Bill I miss you very much and consider you very influential in my life. Though it’s 6 yrs later I hope and Pray the best for Ann, Barbara and Will as they move on with the their lives. I hear your laugh everyday Bill.

Dear Barbara, I am so saddened to read of Bill's death. I feel grateful I had a chance to see him last October at the celebration of his career at CGA. I speak for Bob too and know he would shed a quiet tear at this news. We had wonderful memories with Bill, notably our trip to Henley RR in 1976 where he made his Dear Mother give up her beautiful accommodations at the Red Lion Inn so B and I would have a place to stay! Good grief, such a sacrifice, but so appreciated by us. That trip and associations with Bill led our son to row in high school, go to Columbia and row, and develop a love for NYC to this day. Also led him to a very good job. So it had lasting effects on us all. Bill was the most loyal friend anyone could have the good fortune to have.
I hope you are doing well, it couldn't have been easy to loose such an interesting and fun loving companion and I know you will miss him. I hope it will be easier having his army of friends connecting with you and comforting you over time.
His calling hours were on Bob's birthday and I know he was there in spirit.
Very fondest regards and a hug for you. Barbara Tuneski

Coach,
I know the Good Lord is hearing your booming voice and enjoying your stories now. You were such an inspiration to a Coast Guard Cadet back in 1971. I was in awe of you and was so inspired by you and every word you spoke to me and anybody else. It was an honor for me to be on your JV Lightweight teams. I learned so much. You were such an inspiring leader. You influenced me and made me feel good about myself, something which I've carried through my whole life. God Bless you Coach! If there is a way you can row in Heaven, I'm sure you will coach them well.
With a heavy heart but a thankful heart for having known you.

Bill was a great guy. We had occasional contact over the years. He was proud and friendly. He loved pepper steak and a beer. Enthusiastic about sports and what it took to compete. I remember him standing in front of his house allowing runners to touch his medal as they went by. He was a great encouragement to community efforts and solid in Rotary. He was also a faithful Episcopalian. I treasure having known him.

Coach Stowe (I could never progess to Bill out of a truly deep respect for him), brought something special into the lives of the CG Cadets from day one of his arrival... a challenge to be more than we can be, do more than thought possible, give more than any race or event, have respect for each other and teams we rowed against, cherrish the wins, learn from the losses, and have fun throughout.
He was more than a father figure to us. He nurtured us through tough times at the academy and was always available to turn to for advice or an uplifting word following our graduation.
i'll never forget our first race down in Busch Gardens. He was on the floating dock at the finish having intructed us about how to start with people in hip boots holding the sterns, whiled watching out for poisonous snake, and explaining to the other coaches that this was to be our first attemp in a race. When we shot by in first place, his jaw had dropped and he forgot to stop his stopwatch.
He also helped us to laugh the time we managed to flip our eight in calm waters against the NY Rowing Club.
Although very saddend by his passing, the powerfull memorys of all of our accomplishments and hijinks with him far outweigh his loss, let alone all of the others he has touched throughout his fantastic life.

I echo the heartfelt sentiments already expressed for they represent how he touched so many cadets’ lives in so many similar ways. “I have such fond memories of Coach Stowe and rowing at the Coast Guard Academy.” “Coach Stowe instilled his winning philosophy and drive in all of the CGA crews he led.” “His loyalty to me and to his crews…was unshakable.” “Bill made a real difference in my life, and he helped me develop into a better person.” “To this day, I thank God for placing Bill in my path…” “…my association with Bill and the rowing program made me realize that I was part of something exceptional, worthwhile, and much greater than myself. I will miss Bill tremendously.”

Bill was my coach, mentor, and friend while I was a cadet at the Coast Guard Academy from 1971 to 1975. I will never forget his perpetual smile. As it turned out, crew was the primary force that allowed me to tolerate the academy. In the spring of 1973, I had submitted my letter of resignation to the assistant commandant of cadets, convinced that life had to be better in any other setting as a result of the unique rigors imposed on cadets. My father persuaded me to talk to Bill before pursuing the matter further. Bill asked me a few questions to help me reach the best possible decision regarding my future, leading to my withdrawal of the letter and my graduation two years later. To this day, I thank God for placing Bill in my path to have him guide me in making a decision that I never regretted. In later years, he was instrumental in helping me get into law school at the University of Washington. With Bill's coaching, the academy teams I rowed for experienced great success at the Dad Vail and Head of the Charles regattas, which resulted in cherished, life-long memories. But more importantly, my association with Bill and the rowing program made me realize that I was part of something that was exceptional, worthwhile, and much greater than myself. I will miss Bill tremendously.

My thoughts and prayers are with Barbara,Will and family.Bill changed my life in 1960 by introducing me to the sport of Rowing at Cornell. We won a National Championship together in 1962. I have continued involvement in the sport to this day. Unfortunately Saturday February 20th I am one of the officials at a Reunion of Olympic Athletes in Las Vegas and will not be able to attend Bill's Service. Bill made such a positive impact on so many people that he definitely left this world a better place than he found it. About 20 years ago Barbara and Will were kind enough to have my son Jack as a guest for two summers of Hockey Camp in Lake Placid. It was such a wonderful experience for Jack. He and I have so many great and vivid memories of our time in Lake Placid. All our best wishes to all of you! Much Love, John and Jack Nunn

The rowing community has lost a true legend. Having spent 4 years coxing shells at the Coast Guard Academy between 1972 and 1976, Coach Stowe instilled his winning philosophy and drive in all of the CGA crews he led. With almost no support from the Academy, he pushed our team hard, but always mixed in fun and adventure. The winning record of his crews says it all. I can say with certainty that most of us wouldn't have made it through the Academy and had successful careers in the Coast Guard and beyond without Coach Stowe's guidance and counsel.
My deepest sympathies to Barb and the rest of Bill's family for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow.

My condolences to Bill’s Family and the Rowing Community at large for losing a Great Man. He made quite an impression on those who he came in contact with. Coach Stowe was quite a character and truly a great influence in my life. He coached my first club, Blood Street Sculls (Fred Emerson’s “gang”) in the mid-70s where he inspired a cadre of youth rowers to become lifelong rowers and coaches. I’ve been going at it for 43 years in large part due to Bill. I always enjoyed the opportunity when Bill brought several youth Blood Street Scullers in company with his Coast Guard crews to away regattas. He pushed us to take ownership of our gear, load, unload, rig, watch out for teammates, don’t sweat the small stuff, and to row hard with heart. He will be missed.

It is with greatest sadness which I read of his passing. As I was telling friends and teammates from Villanova, I got my start in rowing as a result of his gold medal winning fame. Back in 1964 my High School (Father Judge) in Philadelphia had a visit from the Vesper Olympic Champions who showed us a film of their Olympic victory. This resulted in about 300 boys coming out for crew that fall. Also I have read his book “all together” twice and enjoyed it immensly. Although I did not know him personnally I certainly feel a kinship with those guys through my days at Vesper and Penn AC, and this old Marine would like to personnally thank him for his service in the United States Navy. BTW my dad was a Naval officer who taught at Cornell in the late 1950’s. Eternal rest grant unto him Oh Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him….

It is with deep sadness, we lost a great friend and fellow rower from Vesper.
I was starting my withdraw from rowing, admiring Bill's talents and dedication, before my wonderful years at the club ended. I never attained the level of Bill and many others, but he was one of which, I looked up to and admired.
It was an honor to share several National club titles with Bill and support his fine spirit, of which he shared with his family and so many other young men like me.
God bless Bill and look after his family.

I have such fond memories of Coach Stowe and rowing at the Coast Guard Academy. It was at his house on the lake where I met Doug Fluddy, who I instantly feel in love with and married after graduation at the CGA. Stories still circulate about the Blood Street Sculls and Coach was a legend.
He was so kind to write my first born a letter about the importance of being a man. Coach Bill Stowe will be missed and I send my heartfelt condolences to Barbara and the rest of his family. It's a sad day but I find comfort in knowing that Doug and Coach are together once again.

As I look at the picture of coach and Barbara christening the "William Stowe", all's I can think of is what an honor it would be to row in that boat. I was fortunate to be coached by Jim Devol and Coach Stowe from '82 to '86. Coach Stowe was the coach of coaches, the man of men, so strong, sometimes sensitive, always meaning well, always pushing but aware of balance, always setting high standards that we all know he himself exceeded. He was one tough guy, that gave it his all, heart and soul. I am hopeful that the crew rowing in the "William Stowe" will respect and appreciate his legacy, stroke hard, work as a team and rake in the victories. Coach Stowe was a legend that will surely be missed. God bless!

Coach Stowe (as he has and will always be remembered by me) coached me as a lightweight while I was a Cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He claimed to like my rowing style and even threatened to "German Rig" the Eight so I could stroke despite me being a "Starboard." I was flattered by his confidence. He also liked my banjo playing and referred to me by that nickname - I'm unsure whether he even recalled my real name after all these years. I like to brag about Coach Stowe and how under his tutelage we used to take down Ivy League Schools rowing programs when our entire student body at that time couldn't have numbered more than 1,000 cadets. When Coach Stowe said it, you knew it was the right thing to do - he had proved himself on the water and his rowers proved themselves and his program with dominance in the mid 1970's when I was a Cadet. I miss knowing he's no longer around. I've prayed and will continue to pray for you as you miss him.

In 1980 Bill gave me an opportunity to be his assistant coach at the Coast Guard Academy. In my four years working under Bill he gave me all his confidence and encouragement. His loyalty to me and to his crews and other coaches was unshakable. His generosity was quietly given with no expectations.
I am like many others who can say that Bill made a real difference in my life, and he helped me develop into a better person. I can not think of a better legacy than his - he made many, many people better.

Bill was year ahead of me at Cornell Hotel School and a fraternity brother. He was our A#1 hockey fan and Big Red's dominant rower. In '04 Bill helped restore rowing at Northwood by securing a shell from Dartmouth. He invited me to christen the shell in my father's name as Coach Fullerton was former crew coach 50 years earlier.
I'll forever remember Bill as a passionate man in all his endeavours. Bill proudly wore the Olympic Gold for USA. He chose Placid to retire...a wise man indeed. We will miss this stalwart fellow.

To the Family of Mr. Stowe,
This was a tough one for me to hear about! Mr. Stowe was a huge part of my childhood growing up at the rink . No matter where we traveled to he was there cheering for his son Will and the rest of his lake placid team mates. There was never a mistake where Mr. Stowe was in the rink because you could hear him over everyone else in the crowd cheering us on! Win or lose after the game he was the first one to give you a high five and say great job, or a pat on the back when we lost a close one. So many memories of a great man that can not all be written here! He will be missed by me and my family and so many others that's for sure!
Rest In Peace Bill! We will see you on the other side my friend!
