Obituary of Mary Ella MacLeod
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Ella MacLeod, age 100, a lifelong resident of Lake Placid passed away on December 4, 2016 at Elderwood at Uihlein. Mary was born in Lake Placid to Isabella and James Nicholson on February 13, 1916. She graduated from Lake Placid Central School in 1933, and worked as a telephone operator in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake for 35 years. Mary truly embodied the spirit of the Adirondacks – for Mary, there was no better place to live than Lake Placid. She had the good fortune to be present for both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. She was an avid skier, and volunteered for the alpine events during the 1980 games.
Mary had a love for books and reading. The Lake Placid Public Library was her favorite place on Main Street. An annual event she always looked forward to was Halloween. Her homemade treats were enjoyed by several generations of Greenwood Street trick or treaters! Knitting and rug hooking were another passion during her life. She was fondly known to many as the "sock lady" and/or the "happy hooker." In her later years, Mary could be spotted walking around Mirror Lake – rain, snow, or shine.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Ronnie MacLeod of Bangor, ME and Wendy Makepeace and her husband Jake of Naples, NY. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert MacLeod.
Per Mary's request there will be no formal funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the Lake Placid Public Library, 2471 Main Street, Lake Placid, NY 12946, in her name.
The M. B. Clark, Inc., Funeral Home in Lake Placid, NY is in Charge of Arrangements. Relatives and friends are invited to share a memory or leave online condolences at www.mbclarkfuneralhome.com .
