Obituary of Robert Treat Gettens
Robert Treat (Bob) Gettens, of Hardy Road, Wilmington, NY died peacefully, Thursday, March 21, 2019. Bob was born on Friday, March 13, 1931 in Bayside, New York. He is survived by his wife Sue Ellen, his son Robert, daughter-in-law Kim, and granddaughters Ellie and Emily. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Bob loved his career as a social studies teacher at Fox Lane Middle School, Bedford, New York. His fascination with history continued throughout his life. Upon retirement, Bob and Sue Ellen moved from North Salem, New York to Wilmington where he pursued a second career as an artist using oils and acrylics. Much of his art was inspired by the beauty of the Adirondacks. In addition to creating art, Bob enjoyed visiting art galleries and museums as well as reading art, architecture and design books. Bob graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelors of Arts degree, received his Masters Degree from SUNY New Paltz and a Professional Diploma from Queens College. He studied art throughout his life and had a degree from the New York School of Interior Design. Bob also served in the US Army, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany which began his lifetime love of travel with family and friends. Arrangements are in the care of the M. B. Clark, inc. Funeral Home, Lake Placid where a memorial service will be held on Monday, March 25th at 11 AM. A celebration of Bob’s life and art work will be planned for the summer.
