Obituary of Jean McCasland
Jean McCasland, 89, of Champlain, NY passed away peacefully on April 18th, 2019, surrounded by family. Cora Jean was born in Westport, NY on May 14th, 1929. The oldest of 6 children born to Charles Ambrose and Marjorie Eloise (Howe) Lobdell, Jean had wonderful fond memories of her childhood growing up on a farm and of her loving family and friends.
Jean married her high school sweetheart Gray Sawyer McCasland on July 3rd, 1948. They raised 4 children and were married 48 years. They lived in various places, including Union Grove, WI, finally settling in Champlain, NY, and later spending winters in Casa Grande, AZ. They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and also seeing Canada, Scotland and Ireland.
Jean had many interests and enjoyed playing the piano, singing, reading, gardening, knitting, sewing and quilting. She was a good cook and enjoyed hosting gatherings. She enjoyed playing games, in particular Scrabble and Dominoes and was a past winner of the Airborne Speedway Powder Puff Derby. She enjoyed traveling, sightseeing and especially visiting family and friends along the way.
In addition to lovingly raising her family, Jean was a member of Three Steeples UMC, singing in the choir for many years, and was a member of Champlain Literary Club, Sweet Adelines, the Red Hat Society and Westport DAR. She participated in craft shows, worked as a receptionist for The Medical Center and was a founding member of the Northern Tier Co-op.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Gray Sr. and an infant son.
Jean is survived by her children; Herbert McCasland (Debby), Gray McCasland Jr. (Debbie), Susan McCasland and Coralee DeMouth (Don), five grandchildren, Gray McCasland III (Tammy), Amanda McCasland, Meghan DeMouth, Katherine DeMouth and Thomas DeMouth, four great grandchildren Dylan LaMere, Austin Burke, Ian-James McCasland and Makayla Burke, siblings Marjorie Haskell (Robert), Margaret Schockner, Naomi Markle, Billie Ann Wilson (Joe), Charles Lobdell (Carol), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be at Clark Funeral Home, 196 Elm St., Champlain, NY on Sunday, April 28 from 2 – 5 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Three Steeples United Methodist Church, 491 Rt. 11, Champlain, NY on Monday, April 29 at 11 a.m.
