Obituary of Patricia R. Hurley

Patricia R. "Pat" Hurley age 92 passed away peacefully at Elderwood of Uihlein on November 10, 2020. She was born in Montclair, New Jersey on September 14, 1928, the daughter of Carl R. and Patricia B. Russell. She graduated from Fair Lawn High School in 1946. The following fall she hopped on a train to begin her college education at St. Lawrence University from which she graduated in 1950. A self- proclaimed " War Bride" she arrived in Lake Placid in April 1951 after her marriage to fellow St. Lawrence graduate and WW II veteran, William Hurley. While raising five children of her own she initiated, developed and ran the nursery school program in the basement of St. Eustace Church. She was a lifelong member of St. Eustace parish, including being the first woman to serve on the vestry, an active member of the Altar Guild for more than 60 years, many of them with her friend Ashley Roland, and, more recently, a participant in the St. Eustace knitting group. Over the years she participated in many civic and community organizations including Girl Scouts, Garden Club of Lake Placid and the Lake Placid Ski Club. She was a longtime member and chairperson of the Lake Placid Village Planning Board and a member of the Lake Placid Central School Board. She volunteered for many ski competitions including the 1980 Olympic Alpine events as also for many Lake Placid Pee Wee Association events. She loved to play bridge, tennis, golf and bocce, enjoying those sports year round in later years during summers in Lake Placid and winters at Ocean Village in Florida. She is survived by her children Janet Bliss (Brian), Barbara Crowley (Dick), Patricia "Missy" Goulette (Ken), William R. Hurley and Michael Hurley, six grandchildren, Gillian Livesay, Brian Crowley, Sarah Frey, Evan Bliss, Andrew Bliss and Kaleigh Goulette and seven great grandchildren . She is also survived by her brothers, Ben and Tim Russell, their wives and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Bill Hurley, predeceased her in December, 2009. Calling hours will be held at the M. B. Clark, Funeral Home in Lake Placid, NY from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday November 20, 2020. A funeral service will be held at St. Eustace Church at 10am on Saturday November 21, 2020 with internment in St. Agnes Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to High Peaks Hospice, the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, St. Eustace steeple repair fund or a charity of one's choice. To Comply to Covid-19 restrictions face masks, hand sanitizing upon entry at funeral home and church, social distancing, and seating at St. Eustace Church will be limited to 60 people.
