I am so sorry to hear the news about Pete. I hated to acknowledge what his life had become due to continuing health problems and Covid. Pete loved to be outdoors and independent, so I am thankful he is now released from his medical confinement. But I still cried when I heard he had passed. It is the end of an era.
Your obituary was very well written and captured the essence of who he was and the great gift he had bestowed upon all of us who were blessed enough to grow up at North Star. It is a beautiful legacy. Pete has had a tremendous impact on my family's life and many others'. I wonder if he realized that. I don't know how much any of us let him know that. We should have told him that every day of his life.
I think back on how, growing up, the kids at North Star revered Pete, even the wilder ones. He was tough and took no crap from anyone. He was a man of few words, but his word was the law and all of us respected that. Parents didn't whine if Pete laid down that law with some young mischief-maker; they knew he was right. And they knew that the next day Pete would be taking that kid water-skiing or horseback riding or climbing Mt. Martin. He kept North Star a wonderful peaceful refuge with not a hint of commercialism. It was not easy for him, I'm sure, when a bunch of yuppies (myself included) took over North Star thinking we knew a better way. Did we?
We now all appreciate the hard work that goes into maintaining a log cottage and the surrounding grounds. Pete did that for decades almost single-handedly. And, it's worth mentioning, he was so-o-o handsome, the young women of the resort would swoon. Many comparisons were made to Paul Newman.
Thanks to you, Kate and Dan and his caring family, Pete was able to spend time at North Star in recent summers despite his declining health. I will never forget his incredible determination to keep going, to the point of carrying one log at a time up the stairs to Treetops, and using that log as leverage to make it to the next step. Such dedication to the place he loved! I hope that somewhere in the cosmos Pete is still tending his woodstove and garden and tossing scraps to his pet crows.
Gratefully yours,
Stefanie
