Steven Thomas Vassar Sr., 65, of Lake Placid, NY, passed away on January 30, 2022, surrounded by love.
Steve was born in Lake Placid, NY, to Thomas G. Vassar and Barbara Jean (Gill) Vassar on December 28th, 1956. He went to Lake Placid High School and graduated in the Class of 1975. Steve always had a great work ethic. As a kid Steve delivered newspapers for The Adirondack Daily Enterprise and had other various jobs throughout the years until he began working for, now known as, The Olympic Regional Development Authority during the 1980 Winter Olympics. During his many years at ORDA, Steve held positions including maintenance, truck driver at the bobrun, drove bobsleds for the Pass Program, until transitioning to the Winter Olympic Musuem. Over his 17 years at the Winter Olympic Museum, Steve shared his love and knowledge of all things Olympic with visitors from all over the world. Steve retired from ORDA in April of 2021.
On top of his love for everything Olympic, Steve loved bobsledding, NASCAR, snowmobiles, motorcycles, fast cars, wrestling, and showing off his car collection with the Tri-Lakes Cruizerz. Steve especially enjoyed cruising around town in his 1986.5 Mustang SVO or his Jeep SRT8 giving his authentic hello, wave, or smile. Additionally, Steve won various medals in National Competitions, The Empire State Games, and North American Championships for bobsledding. More than anything Steve loved his children and grandchildren always taking the opportunity to tell everyone about their accomplishments with pride.
Steve is survived by his life partner Melanie Dushane of Lake Placid, NY; his daughter Amanda Jacques and her husband Dan of Saranac Lake, NY; his son Justin "JT" Vassar of Lake Placid, NY; his son Steven Vassar II and his wife Holly of Constable, NY; his son Thomas Vaughn and his husband Craig of Charleston, SC; his brother Brian Vassar and his wife Nicole of Lake Placid, NY; his brother Doug Jones and his wife Georgina of New Brighton, PA; his grandchildren Landon, Grayson, Rosalee Jean, Deegan, Erin, Sophia Mae; his grandDOGter Reese; his life partners children; and his nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
