Dear Muriel, Anna and Eva,
Ed and I were both deeply saddened to learn of Nils' passing. As the architect who designed the renovation of our 150 year old house, he is forever woven into the story of our home. I remember I didn't want a grey house anymore, since it only adds to the gloom of the shoulder seasons. I thank Nils regularly when I drive up our road and see our deep red house with ink black trim purchased on the rise. Viewing the house from across the way, I delight in the symmetry and balance he brought to the design. I chuckle when I go into the windowless basement 'playroom.' In order to get the large windows in the living room we had to forgo small basement windows. I remember worrying about a playroom with no natural light. Nils said to me, "They do grow up, you know." And alas, they are off to college as I type this, and I am fully basking in the natural light streaming into the living room casting shadow patterns all around. No regrets! At our first Christmas party after all the renovations were complete, Nils asked me if he could wander around a bit, an opportunity he didn't usually have after his work was complete. He told me later it was such a delight to see all the finishing touches and colors we added rounding out the design.
Thank you Nil's for helping us to create this beautiful space we call home. The passion and joy you put into your work are forever part of 615 Alstead Hill Lane!
