Obituary of Ella B. Wood

Ella Wood, age 94, of Lake Placid, passed away after a short illness on February 4, 2023, at Elderwood nursing home. Ella was born in Lake Placid, New York on June 12, 1928 to James & Ella (Daugherty) Stone. She attended school in Lake Placid. She married Robert Wood on June 13, 1950 in Lake Placid and they proceeded to raise three children. Robert predeceased her on March 6, 1976. Ella also worked many years at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid until her retirement. Ella loved dogs and always had one as a companion well into her 80s. She faithfully attended Church at St. Agnes until her health required her to move into Elderwood, where she enjoyed visiting with the resident sisters and clergy at the nursing home. Ella was a tough and independent woman and kept her mind sharp until the end. Besides her husband, Ella was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Kristy Isham, her son John F. Wood Sr., her daughter Lynne Chapman, daughter-in-law Joan Wood and four siblings: Bernard Stone, Joseph Stone, James Stone and Rosemary (Stone) Roy. She is survived by her son Robert Wood of Lake Placid; her five grandchildren: Travis Isham and his partner Bekky Honkala of Lake Placid, Gavin Isham and his wife Janette of Keene Valley, Britt Waite and her husband Thomas of Saranac Lake, John Wood Jr. and his wife Pam of Beacon, New York and Joel Wood of Midlothian, Virginia; her five great-grandsons: James Cartwright of South Carolina, Lucas & Hyler Isham of Keene Valley and Dylan & Tyler Wood of Virginia; a special niece Barbara Roy of Alleghany, New York, a nephew Bernie Roy of Moneta, Virginia, a nephew Jimmy Roy of Lady Lake, Florida and nephew Johnny Roy of Au Sable Forks. She is also survived by her former daughter-in-law Helen Wood of Plattsburgh. There will be no calling hours or service. A burial will take place in the Spring at the convenience of the family.
