Of course, I remember where and who I was with when Kurt Gibson hit his infamous home run in the 1988 World Series game. I was one of the two 10-year-old boys cheering in an apartment front just above the Ausable River. This is just one of the many memories I have growing up with Shawn. There are so many memories and stories it’s hard to know where to start. I first remember playing tee ball with Shawn at Tee Ball Park in Wilmington, NY. We grew up playing tee ball, Little League, some Babe Ruth and high school baseball. Shawn was a much more devoted baseball player than me. He had a great eye for the ball and when he swung, you knew it. At times he could swing aggressively, but when he swung smoothly and followed through, good hits always came of it. He had no fear in the batters’ box, always ready to get after it. He had a natural swing, and when he was on, it was gone.
Summers activities in Wilmington, you could usually find us at the park playing baseball and basketball. Then we were off on our bikes to Sugar Creek for a quick soft drink, bike up to the beach for a swim, and maybe some volleyball against his cousin Nikki. At the beach we would play the farthest rock throw contest. Shawn usually won that one. Next, skipping rocks across the river. We would then wind down the evening by playing video games. Repeat the next day. As we got a little older, I was fortunate to get a 4-wheeler just like Shawn had. We 4-wheeled all over the town. Anywhere we could go and ride we did. Filled our backpacks up for the day and off we went. We listened to a lot of music together. Yes, Vanilla Ice was mixed into our music genres as well as Garth Brooks and a lot of Metallica.
I wouldn’t change a thing about growing up in the late 80 and 90’s with Shawn. We had some awesome adventures with a lot of good local friends to get in fun trouble with. We were fortunate to have parents who encouraged us to get outside and play. Shawn’s friendship was one of the best. We could go for years not seeing each other and pick up right where we left off. Shawn honored that friendship when he drove down to Louisiana to be one of my groomsmen. With no hesitation, he was the first one to arrive and last to leave. So many great stories to tell, just on that trip alone. I’m pretty sure he had a good time, because for the next several years he would bring that up over our phone conversations. He also added himself to the LSU TIGERS fans list around that time.
Thanks for all the memories and being part of my life. You always had my back. I’ll be quietly cheering for your Mets, Jets, and Islanders…but not your 1980’s 49ers teams. Your attention to that team was just a farce and way too convenient bud. Swing away with the Baseball Gods. Rest In Peace, my friend.

It's difficult to process the loss of someone as kind and giving as Shawn. In every interaction, he demonstrated his selflessness and warmth towards others, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy. Shared experiences like workdays and camp nights demonstrated his generosity and genuine friendliness. His absence will be felt by so many, but it's comforting to know that our cherished memories of him will endure forever. Rest in peace, dear friend– we'll meet again someday.

I will always cherish the tree/wood forts that we made at the Wilmington park. The car rides around town multiple times until dark! We always had so much fun growing up. Shawn was a great friend. He had a huge heart and kind spirit. I am glad I got the chance to experience his friendship.
The friendship we all had as kids growing up in Wilmington was unstoppable.
Rest peacefully Shawn you will be missed greatly!
