Obituary of Silva Mary Marnes

Silva Mary Marnes died peacefully on August 27, 2016 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in Plattsburgh. Silva Mary was born on June 24, 1944, the daughter of George (Red) and Silva Barney Marnes. She is survived by her brother, George B. Marnes, of Point Au Fer, and many beloved cousins. Silva Mary graduated from Saint Patrick's School in Rouses Point in 1957, Saint Mary's Academy in 1961, and the College of Saint Rose in Albany in 1965 with a degree in elementary education. Silva Mary taught kindergarten for the Rensselaer City School District for thirty-three years. She began teaching at Fort Crailo School. When it closed, she transferred to Van Rensselaer Elementary. While teaching at Fort Crailo, Silva was very involved in the Parent Teacher Association. She held many offices in the association and was presented with a life membership in the New York State Parent- Teachers' Association. In addition, Silva Mary was involved with the Rensselaer Teachers' Association, serving as President for four terms. During her career, she participated in several negotiation and grievance committees. In June 1998, Silva Mary retired and moved back to Rouses Point and was very active in the community. To stay involved in education, Silva Mary served on the Northeastern Clinton Central School Board from 1999 to 2007, having served as a former President of the Board. For many years, Silva was also an officer on the Board of Directors for the Rouses Point Senior Housing. Silva was a member of Saint Patrick's Parish, having been a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Parish Council. Traveling on the Norwegian Cruise Line was a favorite pastime where Silva made many friends with officers, crew members, and entertainers. Alaska was her favorite port of call. A memorial in Silva's honor will be erected on the Norwegian Gem, her favorite ship. At her request, there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 5 at 11 a.m. at Saint Patrick's Church in Rouses Point. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather at the American Legion Post 912 at 29 Pratt Street, Rouses Point immediately following the services. Donations in Silva's memory may be made to the Rouses Point Rescue Squad. Arrangements are in the care of M. B. Clark Funeral Home in Rouses Point. »(Do not delete this line. It does not print.
