Obituary of Philip Jon Thayer

Please share a memory of Philip to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Philip Jon Thayer, age 77, passed away Monday, November 29th peacefully at his home in Lake Placid. Phil was born on April 4, 1944 in Hartford, Connecticut as the third child of Arthur and Pauline Thayer. Phil graduated Rockville High School and St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vermont ROTC where he majored in Economics. After graduation, Phil proudly served in the Air Force from 1966-72. He was stationed in Southeast Asia and England and achieved the rank of Captain when he received an honorable discharge in 1972. Phil would often say that his ultimate goal in life was to find a place where people work all year to visit, find a way to make a living there, and raise a family. Lake Placid was that place, and he loved it dearly every day until his death. In retirement, he and Claire enjoyed winters in Hilton Head Island, SC. Phil was an active member of the Adirondack Community Church, an integral member of his community, a businessman, a golf addict engaged in the endless pursuit of the perfect "swing thought", a loyal husband, an immensely proud father and grandfather, an eager volunteer, and a kind soul to everyone he met. He was eternally thankful to God and the 12 step program for his 43 years of sobriety. He will be greatly missed by his family, his community, the "Dew Sweepers" at Craig Wood, and everyone who was fortunate enough to cross his path. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Claire; daughters, Amanda and Deborah and their spouses Mark and Garrett; sons, Jon and Tim and their spouses Stacey and Allison, and his grandchildren Jude, Luke, Victor, Annabel, Maeve, and Manolo. His brothers, Art, Tom, Larry and Paul and his sisters Janet and Lois and their families were greatly loved by Phil. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am-11:00 am at the Adirondack Community Church on Saturday, December 4th, 2021. A service will be held immediately thereafter with a reception in Erdman Hall to follow. A graveside service will be held June 18th at 11:00 AM at North Elba Cemetery, Lake Placid, NY. Rev. Derek Hansen will officiate. The Lake Placid American Legion Post 326, Lake Placid will offer honors. A reception will follow at Craig Wood Country Club. If desired, friends may make contributions in his memory to the Adirondack Community Church, the American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society. The M. B. Clark, Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid, NY is in charge of arrangements. Relatives and friends are invited to share a story, upload a photo or leave condolences at www.mbclarkfuneralhome.com .
