Roger was my Math teacher and my House Parent '81-'82.
No other teacher in my life--before or since--had such a profound and indelible influence on me. I think of him often and warmly. I have secretly imagined his "attaboys" every time I do something good...and him looking at me over his glasses with eyebrows raised every time I do something that falls short of what I am capable of. There have been countless moments in my life--with my students, and with my own children--where I felt his presence channeling through me. Whenever I need your strength and guidance, all I have to do is walk a few paces with that supinated gait of yours...and there you are!
Thank you Roger for the incalculable contribution to the man I am and continue to be today. You are to me a hero.
Be at peace. Be at rest.

Mr. Loud was my pre-algebra teacher at Northwood School. He was incredibly kind and intelligent and one of the best teachers I ever had. I am now a teacher myself and I think back on him as a role model for the type of teacher I want to be.

Who but the wizard of the palindrome, the mighty conqueror of the New York Times Crossword Puzzle and the master of all mathematics complex would erect a parking space sign outside his Northwood School residence for his 2001 Odyssey Van that read:”A 2001 Odyssey Space”? That’s right—Roger Loud!
Roger dedicated his life to his family, the out-of-doors and to generations of mathematics students fortunate enough to have been taught by him. His advanced-level courses, as demanding as he could construct, were nonetheless always fully subscribed. For his math “hatchlings” knew if they persisted and followed Mr. Loud’s teaching, that they would fly into high standardized test scores and advanced college-level mathematics. Along the way, Roger made himself available for countless hours of personal extra help unraveling the mysteries of high-level calculus equations.
Roger will always be remembered as a superb intellect, a sardonic wit, a dedicated environmentalist and a kind and gentle soul. He will be sorely missed.
