Obituary of Harold C. Scriver

Please share a memory of Harold to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With broken hearts, we announce that Harold C Scriver, from Chazy, NY, passed away Wednesday, March 08, 2023, at the Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT, from complications due to a bad fall. He was 75 years of age and passed surrounded by his beloved family. Harold was a very witty man who was fond of jokes. His warm laughter and twinkling blue eyes are sorely missed by all. Harold was predeceased by his parents, Harold (Red) and Elizabeth (Betty) Scriver and is survived by his wife, Maddy Scriver, his daughter Neeley Clark, his granddaughters Lexi and Calleigh, stepsons Charles Baker (wife Darbi) and James Baker (wife Meghan), two step-grandchildren, and several cousins on both Scriver and Chevalier side. Harold was born on St Patrick’s day, March 17, 1947, in Plattsburgh, New York. He was raised in his beloved Chazy, NY, in the old blacksmith’s brick house, and spent many happy hours in childhood on the river behind his house with his friends and his dog Jack. He attended the old Chazy Central Rural School, where he made many friends for life. He graduated from Champlain College in 1967, after which he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He attended boot camp in Kentucky and trained as an Armor Intelligence (Reconnaissance) Specialist, then transferred to the Vermont National Guard where he served as Staff Sergeant and section leader. He spent a total of 8 years in service, including 6 months active duty. Harold married Candice Emory Scriver in 1972, and spent many happy years with her and their daughter Neeley in the log home he built for them in 1977. In 2004, Harold remarried, to Madelyn (Maddy) Silva. Harold and Maddy moved several times during their 20+ year relationship, living various places in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and finally Connecticut. They enjoyed making home improvements for each of their homes. The Harold-Maddy mantra was “better than it was.” Harold was an athlete and played in the local ball leagues for most of his life. He loved fast driving in his sports cars and on his motorcycle. He was also an animal lover and often tamed the wild creatures near his home, including the wild ducks who lived in his swimming pool in New York, the wild buck deer he often hand fed in Pennsylvania, and the anole lizards he trained in Florida. He once tried to tame a wild mother alligator, but she proved hostile. Harold held a variety of positions during his long working career, most in the print industry. Positions he held included mechanical drafter, surveyor, manufacturing supervisor, manufacturing engineer, service manager, and bindery supervisor. He retired in 2008. After retiring in Florida, Harold spent his time doing the things that interested him. These included home improvement, fantasy football, genealogy, military history, his beloved pets, and Facebook, where he was active in several groups. He had a large friend group and loved to reminisce and share funny stories and pet photos with his friends. “Be strong, be happy, and remember me with smiles and laughter.” A Celebration of Life will be held for Harold at 11:00-1:00 on Friday, June 23, 2023 at M.
