Obituary of Fred D. Walsh

Fred D. Walsh, Jr. July 2, 1924 - M ay 13, 2013. Crown Point, NY. and Sarasota, Fl. Mr. Fred D. Walsh died Monday May 13th at Moses Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga NY. He is survived by Ethel (McIntyre) Walsh, wife of 64 years and sons Fred D. Walsh III and wife Karen of Frisco, TX, John and wife Joy of Spring Grove, IL and Robert and wife Terry of Essex Junction VT. Granddaughters, Emily and her husband Joshua Ballard and their daughter Lydia of Frisco TX., and Bethany and her husband Rob Jerkins of Memphis TN. He was predeceased by his daughter, Linda in 2007. Mr. Walsh was a member of Lake Placid Lodge #0834, Free and Accepted Masons, Central Massachusetts Steam Gas and machinery Association, Champlain Valley Antiques Gas Engine and Tractor Association, and Vermont Gas and Steam Engine Association, Inc. After graduating Lake Placid High School in 1941, Mr. Walsh went to work for the National Youth Administration (NYA) in Rome Air Depot in Rome, New York, where he enlisted in the Army. Mr. Walsh served in the Army Air Corps, with the 435th Bomb Group (H) 735th Bomb Squadron, where Jimmy Stewart was the Group's Operation Officer. Mr. Walsh participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, Air Offensive Europe Campaigns, where he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with 6 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and 2 Overseas Service Bars. After being discharged from the Army Air Corps, Mr. Walsh was the first graduate from Paul Smith's College, then went on to complete his Bachelor's Degree at Potsdam Teacher's College. He went on to complete his Master's Degree in Education from St. Lawrence University. After completing his Master's Degree, Fred taught Junior High School at Waddington, NY and Sixth Grade at Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake. During the Summer, when not teaching, Mr. Walsh, an avid fly fisherman, worked as a fishing guide in the Adirondacks. Mr. Walsh then worked in School Administration starting at Galway Central School, moving to West Canada Valley at Newport New York, then to Peru Central School where he worked to prepare the school district to prepare for the large influx of students caused by the opening of the Plattsburg Air Force Base. His last administration position was as Superintendent of Schools at Crown Point, NY where he retired in 1983. After retiring from work Mr. Walsh and his wife Ethel traveled extensively through the Northeast attending antique gasoline engine shows, where he actively collected and sold engines. Mr. Walsh also enjoyed fly tying, repairing antique clocks and woodworking making clocks and carts for some of the antique engines he collected. Services will be held at Crown Point Bible Church with committal services at Lake Placid. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 834 - Lake Placid, NY 12946 and Crown Point Bible Church, Crown Point, NY 12928 A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 16th at 2:00 PM at Crown Point Bible Church, Crown Point, NY. Rev. Douglas Woods and Rev. Robert Fortier will officiate. A Graveside Prayer Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 17 at North Elba Cemetery, Old Military Rd, Lake Placid, NY with Rev. Douglas Woods and Rev. Robert Fortier officiating. The M. B. Clark, Inc. Funeral Home in Lake Placid, NY is in charge of arrangements.
